Atex Zones

ATEX refers to two Atex Directives

There are two Atex Directives: one for the manufacturers and one for the users.

ATEX DIRECTIVE 2014/34/EU (previously Atex 94/9/EC )
Applies to the manufacturer/supplier of atex equipment (devices and protection systems destinated to be used in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

The Atex 2014/34/EU Directive is for industries that supply equipment into hazardous area (ex. a forklifts manufacturer). Equipment for operation in hazardous areas must comply with the requirements of ATEX 2014.

Atex equipment is built to a level of protection known as a category which matches the risk.

Atex Category 2G for
Zone 1 hazardous areas
Atex Category 3G for
Zone 2 hazardous areas
Atex Category 2D for
Zone 21 hazardous areas
Atex Category 3D for
Zone 21 hazardous areas

ATEX DIRECTIVE 1999/92/EC
Atex 137 applies to the workplaces with hazardous areas and where explosion atmospheres can be created.

The Atex 1999 Directive is for industries that operate with potentially explosive atmospheres and requires companies to manage the risk and the process safely. Sites (as chemical or pharma industries) should classify the workplaces into hazardous area Zones depending on the frequency and time that an explosive atmosphere is present in the form of gas, vapour, powder or dust.

Atex Zone 1
high risk gas/vapour
Atex Zone 2
medium risk gas/vapour
Atex Zone 21
high risk powder/dust
Atex Zone 22
medium risk powder/dust

These areas must be marked with Ex signs at point of entry

MACHINE DIRECTIVE 2006/42/EC
The machine must be planned and built in order to avoid any kind of explosion risks caused by the machine or by gas, liquids, dusts, vapour and other substances used by the machine.

Atex Zone 1 Cat. 2G (gas, vapour)
Atex Zone 21 Cat. 2D (dust)

Yes, the Explosion Proof Conversion is possibile!

Safe under normal operation and expected malfunction.

Atex Zone 1/Zone 21 area is a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist (Zone1) or in the form of combustible dust (Zone 21) is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally (from 10hrs to 1.000hrs/365d).

Miretti is able to convert equipment to meet Zone 1 and Zone 21 requirements for use across the world. Miretti is able to meet the following legal certifications: Atex, IECEx, CNEx, NEC.

Atex Zone 2 Cat. 3G (gas, vapour)
Atex Zone 22 Cat. 3D (dust)

Yes, the Explosion Proof Conversion is possibile!

Safe under normal operation only.

Atex Zone 2/Zone 22 area is a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas/vapour (Zone 2) or in the form of combustible dust (Zone 22) is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only (from 0,1hrs to 10hrs/365d).

Miretti is able to convert equipment to meet Zone 2 and Zone 22 requirements for use across the world. Miretti is able to meet the following legal certifications: Atex, IECEx, CNEx, NEC.

Atex Underground Group I M2

Yes, the Explosion Proof Conversion is possibile!

Safe for underground workings in mines/tunnels probably exposed to the risk of firedamp/combustible dust. For this type of area is possible to realize an Explosion Proof Conversion.

Instead in Group I M1 the Explosion Protection of an earth-moving machinary is not possible.

Miretti can convert almost all kind of vehicles for a safe underground operation in Atex Zone Group I dangerous area. Miretti Ex Solutions are available for wheel loaders, tow tractors, mobile cranes, scrubbers, access platforms, dumpers, cranes, tankers, tower lights, scissor lifts, boom lifts, sweepers, tuggers, generators, wheel loaders, excavators, mixers, personnel carriers, monorails, ambulances, drilling vehicles, TBM, mining equipment etc…

Atex Zone 0 (gas)
Atex Zone 20 (dust)

No, the Explosion Proof conversion is not possible!

A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist (zone 0) or dust (zone 20) is present continuously or for long periods or frequently (1.000hrs/365d).

For these zones is impossible to realize any Explosion Proof Forklift Conversion.

It is possible to realize an Explosion Proof Forklift/Engine/Special Machine Conversion for Atex Zone 1, Atex Zone 2, Atex Zone 21, Atex Zone 22

Atex Underground Group I M1

No, the Explosion Proof conversion is not possible!

For this zone is impossible to realize any Explosion Proof Machine Conversion.
For underground filed, it is possible to realize an Explosion Proof Conversion for Atex Group I M2.
