Explosive Environments

"Explosion-Proof Protection” means Safety in areas at risk of explosion

Electric and Diesel Powered Industrial Equipment used in areas containing explosive or flammable materials (formally known as Hazardous Areas) must be protected (Explosion Proof protected) to prevent any operation of the equipment from igniting the atmosphere.

When we talk about Explosion-Proof we mean Safety (for people, vehicles and the environment) in areas at risk of explosion. Unprotected or inadequately protected equipment could be a source of ignition in such atmospheres and lead to a fire or explosion. Environments and industries, where there could be potentially explosive atmospheres (ie. acetylene, hydrogen, methane, propane, ethylene etc…) and dusts (ie. flour, powder, coal, magnesium, etc…) are many.

Paints and coatings, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and drinks, cosmetics and perfumes, printing inks, aerosols, on and off-shore areas, oil&gas environments, mines and tunnels, etc…  all locations in which a mobile vehicle must work in safety. The consequences might otherwise be catastrophic.

The complexity of explosion-proof systems requires specific technical preparation and an in-depth understanding of the risks, safety regulations and industry standards in force in different countries.

Miretti Ex systems are developed, manufactured and certified in according to ATEX 2014/34/EU, IECEx, CNEx, NEC and international standards globally.

Why apply Explosion Protection?

Working in environments that are potentially at risk of explosion, where flammable or potentially flammable materials are handled, implies the necessity to operate with machinery that can boast the highest safety standards. It is essential that end-users, as well as operators and maintenance technicians, receive proper training for the appropriate, correct, and compliant use of explosion-proof systems, ensuring safe usage of converted equipment.

Hazardous Areas are divided into Zones

Why Apply Explosion Prevention & Protection?

Explosive Atmosphere: Mixture of a flammable substance in the air under the form of gas, vapour, mist or dust, in normal atmospheric conditions, in which, after the ignition, the combustion proceeds until the mixture runs out.
Hazardous Area: a place in which there is or could be an explosive atmosphere due to the presence of gas/vapour/mist/dust, in such a quantity as to require particular measures for the realization, installation and use of the structures.
Protection: elimination of the explosion hazard using different type of protection for mechanical and electrical risk: containment (d) - segregation (p-m-q-o-nC-t) - prevention (e-i-nA-h).
Atex Zones (summary)

Zone 0 (gas)

Zone 20 (dust)

NO!

A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapouror mist (zone 0) or dust (zone 20) is present continuously or for long periods or frequently (1.000hrs/365d). For these zones is impossible to realize any Explosion Proof Forklift Conversion.

Zone 1 (gas)

Zone 21 (dust)

YES!

Safe under normal operation and expected malfunction. Atex Zone 1/Zone 21 area is a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapouror mist (Zone1) or in the form of combustible dust (Zone 21) is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally (from 10hrs to 1.000hrs/365d). For these zones is impossible to realize any Explosion Proof Forklift Conversion.

Zone 2 (gas)

Zone 22 (dust)

YES!

Safe under normal operation only. Atex Zone 2/Zone 22 area is a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas/vapour (Zone 2) or in the form of combustible dust (Zone 22) is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only (from 0,1hrs to 10hrs/365d).

Underground

Group I M2

YES!

Safe for underground workings in mines/tunnels probably exposed to the risk of firedamp/combustible dust. For this type of area is possible to realize an Explosion Proof Conversion. Instead in Group I M1 the Explosion Protection of an earth-moving machinary is not possible.
